AL-BAB, Syria - The Turkish Defence Ministry has confirmed that at least 18 civilians were killed and twenty-seven injured in the bombing Saturday in the Turkish-controlled Syrian city of al-Bab.
Voa News captured the event on video:
Turkey has blamed the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) for the attack which resulted from the detonation of a car bomb, describing them as 'terrorists.'
"Inhumane and uncivilized PKK/YPG terrorists continue to target innocent civilians using the same methods as Isla. This time the terrorists detonated a car bomb in the Al-Bab bus terminal in the Op Euphrates Shield area, killing ten civilians and injuring more than 15," the ministry said in a post on Twitter on Saturday.
Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday said it was important to not refer to terrorist groups as Kurds.
"It is disrespect to define the YPG and the PYG as the Kurds," Erdogan told the opening ceremony for Social Security Institutions district branches in Istanbul on Saturday.
"They are terrorists," he said.
He added it was important not to confuse "terrorists with my Kurdish brothers."
The YPG and its political wing, the PYD, are Syrian offshoots of the PKK, a designated terror organization by Turkey, the U.S and the European Union.
