NAIROBI, May 26 (Xinhua) -- The Kenyan police on Thursday shot dead four people after rowdy youth demonstrating against insecurity stormed a police station in western Kenya.
Three police officers were injured in the chaos when protesters tried to overrun the police station in Isebania, a town in Migori County, county police commander Mark Wanjala said Friday.
The protesters, angry over insecurity at the border between Kenya and Tanzania, attempted to set fire to the police station, Wanjala said.
He said the group, pretending to be mourners, were armed with stones and other crude weapons when they stormed the station, engaging police in running battles that forced the officers to use live bullets.
The protestors attempted to free suspects in police custody and also targeted the armory, Wanjala said.
He said the unrest began when a group of protestors stormed the station carrying the body of a local businessman killed by robbers about a week ago.
It was the second time the station came under attack this month.
On May 20, at least 12 police officers were injured when a group of protesters raided the station at the Kenya-Tanzania border.
