Brandon Wu birdied four of his last seven holes Friday to take a one-stroke lead at the midway point of the Puerto Rico Open at the Grand Reserve Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
Wu carded a 5-under-par 67 for a two-round total of 133, one stroke ahead of Australian Greg Chalmers and two ahead of Puerto Rico's Rafael Campos and South African Branden Grace.
Wu, 24, is playing in just his seventh professional PGA Tour event, and this marks the first time he has led a tournament. He opened the day one shot back of Tommy Gainey, and birdied No. 1 and No. 2 to send him on his way, and he was solid through his round before finishing strong.
First-day leader Gainey followed his 65 of Thursday with a 76, after he double-bogeyed No. 7 and had four other bogeys with just two birdies on the day. His 141 is tied for 38th place, eight shots off the lead.
Campos is inside the top five after 36 holes for a third time in his PGA Tour career. Both previous occasions came at the Puerto Rico Open, when he finished tied for tied for eighth in 2016 and tied for 10th in 2017.
The Puerto Rico Open is an alternate-field PGA Tour event running concurrently with the World Golf Championships event in Bradenton, Fla.
